Commercial electrical planning comes down to three answers: what the existing service can carry, what the new equipment will add to it, and which hours the work can happen in. Those decide whether a change is a weekend job or a staged project.
What tells you a building is near its electrical limit?
Buildings rarely run out of power all at once. They run out gradually, and the early symptoms get treated as quirks of the place until a new machine arrives and nothing has room for it.
- A panel schedule with nothing free on it, and spaces filled by tandem breakers to buy room
- Subpanels fed from subpanels, each added for one piece of equipment
- A main breaker that has tripped more than once, which is never a coincidence
- Lights and screens that dip every time a compressor or a press starts
- Extension cords and temporary feeds that have quietly become permanent
- Equipment that runs hot or faults out in July and behaves in October
A load recording over a normal working week settles the argument. It shows the real peak rather than the sum of the nameplates, and it usually reveals that the problem is distribution, not the incoming service. That distinction is worth knowing before anyone applies to the utility for more power.
What has to be confirmed before new equipment arrives?
The week a machine lands is the worst time to discover what it needs. Five details, checked from the documentation rather than from memory, cover almost every delay we are called out to fix.

How does the work happen without closing the business?
Almost all of it can, with enough notice. The parts that genuinely need power off are shorter than people assume, and the preparation around them does not need power off at all.

Where does lighting belong in the plan?
Lighting is usually the one line on a commercial plan that pays something back, and it is the easiest to fold into work already happening. If a panel is being changed or a ceiling is open, that is the cheapest moment to deal with fixtures that need a lift every time a lamp fails.
The choice between retrofitting existing fixtures and replacing them comes down to the condition of the housings, the mounting height and how much maintenance the old fixtures generate. Commercial lighting work goes in section by section during business hours in most buildings, with aisles or areas going dark one at a time rather than the whole floor. Controls are worth deciding at the same time, because occupancy sensors and timeclocks are far simpler to add while the circuits are already open.
Who handles the permits, the inspections and the utility?

Where the utility has to be involved, for a larger service or a scheduled disconnect, that application and that scheduling are ours as well, and they are usually the longest lead time on the whole project.
